This design is another version — but very close in terms of the image — of our Starfish Story Charcuterie Slate. The starfish is slightly different, as this was my original design. I later decided to enlarge the starfish, and make it look more realistic, for the charcuterie board.
As with the charcuterie slate, this coaster contains my version of the Starfish Story:
One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it back into the ocean.
Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you doing?”
The boy replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.
“Son,” the man said, “don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make a difference!”
After listening politely, the boy bend down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf. Then smiling at the man, he said… “I made a different for that one.”
This is one of my favorite stories that inspires my “real job” as a criminal defense lawyer. I’ve written about it numerous times on my law website, most recently in “The Tracks We Leave.” In an odd way, these stories are connected with what I do for my part — Bunny Chafowitz has her own drivers — on this website. My law practice often has me thinking deeply about people, and requires a significant amount of creativity to achieve results. One reason I love exploring photography, laser engraving, sublimation, and designing images is that it nurtures that creative aspect of my life.
I hope you find this as inspiring a story as I do. And I hope it inspires you to buy one, or more (!) for your office, or home.
